Woodworking is one of the fastest growing hobbies; it's fun
and satisfying to make your own pieces of furniture. But if
you're just starting out, it can be frustrating not knowing
the various pieces of equipment that you will need to
complete your first project. Here's what you'll need to get
started.
First, go to your local hardware store and get some
measuring tools. You will need the basics: a ruler, a tape
measure, and a protractor. These supplies are with school
items, and you can get them all for only a few dollars.
Check a discount store or local retailer.
You may want to get a level, especially if you plan to
make larger or more intricate pieces. A level allows you
to measure straight lines so that your furniture is
aligned correctly.
Now you can measure the wood, but you need to be able to
cut it. You have to get a saw. Ask for help with this
purchase as it is the most expensive one on the list of
things you'll need. Saws have many different features and
range from $30 to several hundred. Start out with a basic
saw and move up as you have more experience.
You may want to start with a circular saw. Most people
recognize these saws. They have a circular blade with a
protective shield. These saws are anchored onto the base of
the saw, which allows you to sit it on wood and run it
across to cut. These typically have an electric motor and
need to plug in.
Table top saws also come in many varieties of shape, size,
and functionality. Choose a saw based on your previous
experience. You don't want to get a saw that you - as a
beginner - will not be able to work with. On the other
hand, you don't want a saw that won't grow with you, so
look for some versatility.
Now, you have the creation tools. Let's move on the
assembly tools. After all, you have to be able to put
together your saw. You will need bits, a hammer, a
screwdriver, clamps, and other basic hardware supplies.
You may already have these supplies around the house
although you may want to get ones that are dedicated to
your woodworking once you get started. These are basic
tools and like the measurement tools, are available for
only a few dollars each.
Along with assembling materials, you will need
finishing products. Sandpaper, steel wool, and scrapers
are the basic finishing supplies. These items will let
you create a smooth surface that can be painted,
stained, or otherwise decorated. You should pick out the
stains and paints during this part of the process as
well.
This may sound like a long list, but it isn't really. Many
of these items are easily obtained and are available in
common retailers. So, shop around to make sure that you get
the best deals and, don't be afraid to ask the salesman, if
you have any questions about the product. Happy
woodworking!
